The American experiment in Constitutional government based on Enlightenment ideals and norms has run its course. I have theories on why and how it happened but it doesn’t matter. It’s over, maybe forever. And none of this “rigged”, “cheating” whining from me; the American electorate has definitely chosen “strongman” governance. We have Fscked Around and now we will all Find Out. Leopards will eat faces and we fully deserve it.

There will be people who say this decision is not momentous, just as they said “he was just joking” and “he doesn’t really mean what he says”. I disagree. With a sociopath [re-]entering the White House, toadies in ascendance in the other two branches of government and a mandate from the electorate the stage is set for a functional dismantling of our democracy.

This outcome is not just suboptimal (as is every election in which your preferred candidate loses) but unthinkable. With this vote, Americans are turning their backs on basic decency, the founding documents, and the social contract. This lying cretin was seen a few days ago pantomiming fellatio on a microphone. It’s not as if his policy chops somehow counterbalance his vulgarity, cruelty, and self-absorption. His campaign promises consist of ludicrous proposals to magically balance the budget and eliminate the income tax through tariffs, to round up and deport 11 million or more people, and to solve foreign conflicts through his supposed power of intimidation - Mona Charon

backstory

At my US Army enlistment in 1984 I swore to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. I don’t know how to process what we as a nation just did in light of my oath. How we went from our cold war victory over the USSR to delighting in disinformation and electing a leader who fawns over dictators, said he wants to be a dictator and exact revenge on political enemies. I have stayed in the same civic place since taking that oath; it is the nation that has moved toward authoritarianism.

I have lost what little faith I had in Americans. I can’t unsee the fact that any given stranger is likely to have either:

• voted for a fashy-curious sociopath; or
• not cared enough about the United States to participate

A pox on both those houses. I will not knowingly help either of them in any way.
