relo: running from freezing weather
There are a couple main pivot points in my snowbirding life: running from the heat, then running from freezing weather. I made the transition today.
leaving Santa Fe
I’ve seen frost on my windshield and the grass before, but real freezes were forecast for Oct 31st. So I got ready and bailed today (the 30th)
- filled the gas tank
- water was already full, due to water harvest at PF and elsewhere
- fridge full of manager’s special perishables
- normal pantry of staples
- 40# of dog food
- used library wifi to update all devices, finish all downloads, backup data from the virtual Linux server that runs this site
arriving in Alamogordo
I got to Alamogordo around noon. Very few rigs out here boondocking, so we have about 100yd between us. Dull roar of Reapers and (Reserve?) F16s taking off and flying around.
power harvest along the way
While underway 1,075Wh got replaced into the bank. It would have been more but I have it set up for incomplete charge. In this config the solar Absorps at 13.6v until acceptance falls to 24A.1
Because of alternator contribution the solar dropped to float around 9:30AM (see orange line on inset image). Thereafter the solar idled for the most part. There were two bumps of non-zero harvest; when I stopped to let Muffin pee, and when we arrived at the new boondocking spot.
The final tally at the destination was alternator 825Wh, solar 250Wh. Camped in place from noon to 5pm the solar made another 620Wh, mainly to cook lunch and run normal loads.
update Nov1
The relo paid off. Several degrees warmer here and no hard freezes forecast for the next two weeks.

0.05C (14A) + 10A for usual background loads. This gets me somewhere between 60% and 80% SoC, depending. ↩
