I’ve been kicking this around for a while and a quote just spurred me to fire up the keyboard.

AI pragmatism

I’m not an AI fanboi or hater. I think it’s something we have to grapple with and plan for.

the quote

the cobol demo Anthropic showed today caused a big drop in [IBM’s] stock, but realistically, it’s going to crush a huge part of their business that depended on busloads of consultant developers that deliver enterprise systems that never actually work. It seems like AI can generate systems that don’t work far far faster and cheaperjerry

While I assume it was meant to be sardonic there is explanatory value in it. Let’s consider the entertainment industry where leopardy face-eating is at its most obvious:

  1. Corporations feed audiences substandard crap from talentless “artists” and make millions
  2. Corporations are shocked, shocked I say, to learn that AI can make substandard crap much easier, faster, and cheaper.

IMO there will still be a market for actual art from actual artists (who may or may not use AI).
