upgraded from Visible base to Visible+
I changed my Visible plan from the $25 base to the $35 plus plan. There are a few perks but the only one that affects me is the removal of deprioritization.
deprioritization
The lesser (but numerically higher) priority of the base plan generally doesn’t affect me but there are three scenarios where it does:
- crowded cells in cities
- semi-remote areas where there are few towers but population can spike
- where I am now in Los Alamos overlooking the research facilities.
- where I will be this winter (LTVA, assuming the govt shutdown is resolved)
I might drop back to the $25 plan again in the Spring, but since I’m on firmer financial footing these days the $10/mo isn’t a Huge Deal.
the difference
Visible’s base priority appears to be QCI 9 and Verizon postpaid, Visible+, etc, are QCI 8. These metrics were for the same large file before and after the upgrade:
- before: 17.36kB/s
- after: 219.35kB/s
No, 219kBps isn’t fast by any stretch but the local coverage is already stressed. Basically the $10 bump allows me to muscle in on the crowded-but-normal-priority data. I think this will pay off at the LTVA.
