burn can
Although I have a small gasifying burner1 it’s so small that it can be difficult to use for paper trash I pick up at any new-to-me campsite.
So sometimes I use steel coffee cans to make burn cans. Not much to it:
- air holes punched down low with a church key
- mesh cover on top to keep burning trash from escaping
Not pretty or fancy but highly functional. I think these are what used to be called hobo stoves. Takes about a year or so to burn through so a new can is required.
Note: I considered making a mesh false bottom for this can, but it’s wide enough that trash probably won’t fill the bottom, and it’s short enough that I didn’t want to reduce the vertical space.

amusingly/depressingly, the Amazon listing says “This item can’t be delivered to an Amazon Pickup Location because it is classified as hazardous material. Please choose a different delivery location.” It is literally only stainless steel. WTF. ↩
