backchannel: catering to fools

from this reddit thread,  on a discussion of Glacier Park backcountry passes being cancelled because, among other things, rangers would not be present for search-and-rescue operations.

My take:

We know that some / many people are foolish. Knowing that, to what extent are we willing to restrict the lives of everyone else in order to protect the foolish from their own bad decisions? When fools inevitably do foolish things, how do we limit their ability to externalize negatives onto others?
