what interests me

I like the idea of sharing essential bandwidth with others. In my perfect world everyone’s wifi router would be open for use with email, web, and other relatively lightweight uses. OTOH, if you want to stream movies or torrent you can buy your own damn connection.1 IMO dial-up or ISDN speeds would be fine and prevent the short attention span leeches from moving in.

I would have no problem with account-based access. Admins2 could audit their users and block/limit abusers, and possibly share problematic accounts with other admins who could decide what they want to do with that information.

past experiments

  • open router - when I lived in apartments around 2008 I opened an isolated guest AP on my router. I ran it for about a year until it started to get abused for torrenting, etc.
  • Meraki - when I bought a house a guy was trying to get a Meraki mesh going in DFW. I put up a node in my house but I don’t remember how often it was used.
  1. or join a like-minded mesh

  2. ie, owners of the routers
