Another buck or two for BMSs with that feature is too much of an investment I guess.

If every ice cream comes with sprinkles then everyone must buy them. If sprinkles are a quarter extra then those who want them can pay extra for them, and those who do not want them (or who might want them but don’t think they are worth a quarter) aren’t forced to get them. People without a surplus quarter can still buy ice cream instead of being priced out.
